Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) Schools Outreach Manager, Michael O’Connor has officially taken the reins as President of the Maths Association of Victoria (MAV).

Stepping into the role as of this month, the annual appointment will also see him represent the state nationally at the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers (AAMT).

Congratulating O’Connor, AMSI Director Tim Brown said his Presidency was a great opportunity.

“An outstanding and much deserved achievement, AMSI wishes Michael the very best as he takes on this role, which will further deepen the relationship between AMSI and AAMT,” said Professor Brown.

As MAV President, O’Connor will help lead the Association’s advocacy and impact in schools and communities across the state, as well as providing a voice for mathematics in Victoria. He will also sit on the AAMT Board along with representatives from other states and territories.

The national teacher association for mathematics, AAMT has a long history of leading critical policy discussions and supporting teachers through access to resources and professional development opportunities. Objectives that closely mirror those of the AMSI Schools Program and its successful Choose Maths project.

As Schools Outreach Manager, O’Connor has been a force for Choose Maths, working with his team to deliver professional development and training at schools around and develop classroom resources. Experience he will no doubt draw over the next twelve months of his MAV Presidency.

A mathematics teacher and passionate and respected advocate for mathematics education, he is excited to bring his expertise and experience to this new challenge.

“It is an honour to serve as president of the Mathematics Association of Victoria and represent our state on a national level at AAMT,” said O’Connor.
